Christmas onesie ideas that survive Boxing Day

Christmas is when this category peaks, and it is also when most of the regretted purchases happen. A onesie bought purely as a Christmas Day photograph gets worn once. A onesie bought as a warm thing that happens to arrive in December gets worn for years.

The classic. Everyone in the same design on Christmas morning, one photograph that gets framed, and a household that is warm enough to open presents on a cold floor.

Two things make the difference between this working and not working.

Pick a design that is not explicitly festive

This is the single best piece of advice in this article. A onesie covered in snowflakes and holly is a garment with a two-week window. A matching set of the same animal, in the same colour, is just as effective in the photograph and is still in use in February. If you want the Christmas signal, get it from the colour rather than the print: a set of reds, or a set of greens, reads as festive on the day and reads as normal in March.

Size the children up

Children's onesies are sized by height, and a child who is mid-growth-spurt in December will not fit the same size next Christmas. Size up and turn the cuffs back. The Christmas Eve box

If your household does Christmas Eve boxes, a onesie is close to the ideal item for one: it is bulky enough to fill the box, it is soft enough to be exciting to unwrap, and it can be put on immediately, which is the whole point of the tradition. Pyjamas, a film and a onesie is a complete evening and it costs you no effort on the 24th.

One practical note: order early enough that you are not making decisions in the last week of December. Late November is comfortable. Mid-December is a gamble with the couriers, not with us.

Buying for adults who claim they do not want anything

The person who says they do not need presents is usually the person sitting in a cold living room in a thin dressing gown. A onesie is the correct present for them precisely because they would never buy it for themselves. It is not extravagant, it is not clutter, and it solves an actual daily annoyance.

Choosing the design

• Go for what they already love. A character from a film they quote, an animal they have a soft spot for, a pet that looks like the hood. Specificity is what makes a onesie feel personal rather than generic.

The timing

• Give them out on Christmas Eve, not Christmas morning. Everyone wakes up already wearing them and the photograph happens naturally, rather than being staged over breakfast.
