Onesie vs dressing gown vs hoodie blanket

We sell all three, so we have no particular horse in this race. What we do have is a lot of conversations with people who bought the wrong one, and the pattern is consistent: they chose by how cosy it looked rather than by what they actually do between dinner and bed.

A onesie or kigurumi is a full one-piece with legs, a hood and a long zip. Because it is closed all the way round, nothing falls open, nothing needs holding shut and there are no drafts at the waist.

It wins when

• You move about: kitchen, stairs, letting the dog out, fetching something from the car.
• Your legs get cold, which a robe simply does not solve.
• You want to sleep in it as well as lounge in it.
• You want it to be fun. A character onesie is a mood; a dressing gown is a garment.

It loses when

• You are the sort of person who is in and out of it several times an evening. Every bathroom trip is a full unzip.
• You run hot. It is warm all over, by design.
• You need to answer the front door without a conversation about it.

The lazy robe

A lazy robe, sometimes called a snuggle robe or an oversized wearable blanket robe, is the middle option: robe-shaped, but cut far bigger and in much thicker fleece than the thin towelling thing hanging on your bathroom door. Deep sleeves, wide body, usually a hood and a belt or wrap front.

It wins when

• You are in and out of it constantly, and speed matters.
• You want it over pyjamas, over clothes, straight out of the shower.
• Several people in the house will share it, because there is no sizing to argue about.
• You want warmth without the whole-body commitment of a onesie.

It loses when

• Your legs are the cold part. A robe leaves everything below the knee to fend for itself.
• You want to sleep in it. The belt works loose and the whole thing twists.
• You sit cross-legged, at which point it becomes a fight.

The hoodie blanket

A blanket hoodie is exactly what it sounds like: an enormous fleece blanket with a hood and a front pocket, worn like a poncho. It is the warmest thing of the three by a clear margin, because it has the most air in it and the least fitted shape.

It wins when

• You are staying on the sofa. All evening. That is the use case, and it is excellent at it.
• You want to share your warmth with a partner, a child or a dog, all of whom fit underneath.
• You are watching sport outdoors, or sitting in a cold garden in October.
• You want a present that does not need a size, because it does not have one.

It loses when

• You need to carry a cup of tea and open a door at the same time.
• You have stairs.
• You want to sleep in it, unless you enjoy being wrapped like a parcel.

Choosing by how you actually spend the evening

You cook, tidy, and are rarely sitting still

Onesie. It is the only one of the three that follows you around without needing to be held.

You come home, shower, and want warmth immediately

Lazy robe. Nothing beats it for getting warm in under ten seconds, and it goes over damp skin without fuss.

You put a film on at eight and do not move

Hoodie blanket. Anything else is a compromise you did not need to make.

You are cold in bed as well as on the sofa

What about heating costs?

We are not going to put a number on it, because your home, your tariff and your tolerance are not ours. The honest version is this: a thick fleece layer lets a lot of people sit comfortably with the thermostat lower than they otherwise would, and the effect is most noticeable in a room you occupy alone in the evening. That is a reason to own one. It is not a reason to buy three.

If you can only have one

Get the onesie. It is the most versatile of the three, it covers your legs, you can sleep in it, and it is the only one that lets you live a normal evening while wearing it. The robe and the blanket are better at their specific jobs, but the onesie is the one that gets worn most nights.
